11/7/20

Ohio, Amherst.  1964 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar.  I was the only one interested at the $3.00 plus $1.00 opening bid.  These do not show up very often.  A bargain!

11/8/20

Oregon, Burns.  1959 Oregon Centennial Half Dollar.  Very choice near Proof-Like surfaces.  Start $9.99 plus 50¢ shipping.  There were 5 bids placed by 3 bidders and it sold for $30.00.  This showy piece is probably well worth the price it brought.

11/9/20

11/10/20

North Dakota.  1975 Seventh Cavalry Dollar in .999 Silver.  Edge Number 001201.  Sold to a single bidder for the opening bid of $25.00 plus $3.00 shipping.  I got excited for a while because the seller described this as a SOUTH Dakota 7th Cavalry Dollar - which is normally dated 1974 - and I had not heard of a 1975 dated piece.  The first two issues in this set are nearly identical -with the same obverse, except for the date, and the reverse also the same except for showing North Dakota instead of South Dakota…and you gotta admit that the outlines of North and South Dakota look pretty much the same!  Then I noticed that it said CANADA above the northern border, and that showed the seller’s error.  Too bad, that would have been a nice addition to the catalog!

11/10/20

11/15/20

Unknown Location, Inverness.  1954 Inverness Dollar - variety with greater number of nuggets in gold pan.  About Uncirculated.  Start $17.99 plus $2.95.  There were 4 bids by as many bidders and I won this for $49.88.  The seller offered this as being from the town of Inverness, California, and noted that it was not listed in either of the Kappen California token catalogs.  I am still not sure about its issuing location, but intriguing recent posts in the tokencatalog.com site suggest it may be from Nova Scotia in Canada!  The site has also attributed it to California.  Nova Scotia has many gold mines, but Inverness is a coal mining town - and you don’t need a pan to mine coal!  Also, while 1954 was the 50th Anniversary of the town, the celebration was held during the week of July 25-31.  However I don’t think a final redemption date a week later would be unusual.  So for now, forget California, forget Georgia/South Carolin area, and forget Florida.  My current best guess is Canada, but I do not know for sure, and will continue to list it as a possible MTC from an uncertain location.

11/20/20

Washington, Seattle.  1962 Century Exposition Dollar.  About Uncirculated.  Miraculously graded MS-66 and encapsulated by NGC.  Sorry NGC, there was enough wear to remove the plating on the observation deck of the tower, Washington on the map, the raised parts of the monorail, and the “21” at the bottom of the obverse, as well as the “21”  and the circle of stars on the reverse.  People tell me that for commercial grading, some wear is acceptable for for an Uncirculated grade.  I don’t agree with that, but I do think that a premium MS-66 gem grade should certainly be reserved for unusually nice examples, even when assigned by NGC.  Anyway, the sale price probably reflects how well it was appreciated by the bidders:  After a 99¢ with FREE shipping start it brought $14.50 after 8 bids by 7 bidders.  Today’s NGC grading fees start at $17.00.
