11/8/17

Kansas.  1954 Official Centennial Coin for Hays, Kansas.  Unknown mintage.  Not previously cataloged individually, but the generic ones without a location cataloged for $3.00.  This was a decent uncirculated piece - and the first example I had noted on Ebay since I started these listings 5+ years ago.  Still I was the only bidder at the $9.95 with FREE shipping starting price.  Seems cheap.

11/8/17

11/9/17

Hawaii.  1883 King Kalakaua Half Dollar.  This is a straight out counterfeit - the kind that Ebay says are not allowed because it is an exact copy and not marked COPY.  This from one of the Chinese sellers where many of these fakes come from, but the same piece is offered by many other sellers, sometimes noting that it is a copy, but mostly not.  Not listable.  I will list commemoratives that incorporate the original coin designs, but not items made to deceive.  This one looks absolutely authentic, and is in a glorious proof- like condition - a very expensive coin if it were real.  But the $4.99 with FREE shipping (from China, no less) should make you suspect its authenticity.  The seller does not say it is real, nor does he say it is fake.  He does say the composition is “silvery-plated”, and of course the real thing is  made of .900 fine silver.  I bought one of these a year or two ago and have been carrying it around in my pocket to see how it wears, and I thought it was a neat novelty, and cheap at $4.95 postpaid.  The problem is in what happens to them after they are purchased from the supplier.  They can easily be sold for much higher prices by anyone willing to cheat their customers.  Believe me, there are a lot of people out there like that - some of whom list them right back on Ebay in deceptive ways.  All you have to do is stick one of these in a group of common foreign coins, and it is quite likely someone will spot the “rarity” in the group and bid a couple hundred dollars for a lot really not worth more than $20.00, all the time thinking they are getting a real steal!  The seller usually gets away with it because they describe their lot as a group of coins, tokens, medals, copies and souvenirs - or something like that.  They are covered, and Ebay won't help you get your money back.

11/10/17

Missouri, North Kansas City.  1962 50th Anniversary Half Dollar.  Mintage 5,000.  Catalog value $3.50.  Not especially scarce, but somehow this one has escaped my notice for quite a while now.  This is my first time to document it in these online listings.  Sold as a Buy It Now item for $5.50 plus $2.65 shipping.

11/10/17

South Dakota.  South Dakota Dollars, series 1 complete.  1971 to 1980, this time without the heavy plastic case.  The start was just $5.99 for the 10 coins, and there was FREE shipping.  Incredibly, it sold to a single bidder at the opening price!

11/11/17

Hawaii.  2007 King Kamehameha $20 Norfed with Hawaiian Islands Map Counterstamp.  Unknown mintage.  Too new to have been included in the last edition.  Offered for $295.00 with FREE shipping.  Also now with a Make Offer option.  This one lives on in the Seller’s Store and is still available as I type this up on January 28.

11/12/17

Alaska, Matanuska Valley.  1985 ARRC 50th Anniversary Token set, 1¢ to $10.00.   Eight tokens in plastic holder of issue, numbered 1467.  Start $79.55.  Postage $6.75.  After two unsuccessful weeks as an auction item, it became a BIN item at a slightly reduced price - $79.50 - still with $6.75 shipping.  After a single week at this new level, the seller ended the listing unsold.

11/12/17

Arizona, Lake Havasu City.  London Bridge Dollars.  Set of first six issues (1972-1977) in snap-lock plastic case.  Start $60.00.  Postage $6.25.  After Christmas it became a BIN for $55.00 plus $6.25, and it remains available at that price today.  The current listing ends on February 22.  While tracking this set, Ebay pointed out another set that has been available as long as this set has, priced at $99.99 BIN with FREE shipping.

11/12/17

Hawaii, Maui.  1993 Maui Trade Dollar.  Start $6.99.  Postage $3.00.  After 2 weeks the start was lowered to $4.99, and a week later to $3.99 - still plus the $3.00 shipping - and that apparently did the trick because it sold to a single bidder.

11/13/17

Indiana, Attica.  1966 Centennial Half Dollar.  Start $1.88.  Postage $2.67.  No bids. Not relisted.

11/14/17

Kansas, El Dorado.  1971 Centennial Dollar.  Oxidized Nickel-silver.  In heavy plastic holder.  Start $5.00 plus $3.00 shipping.  No bids.  The following week it was lowered to a $1.00 start - and still no one bid.  Then the listing was ended by the seller unsold.

11/14/17

Texas, Republic of Texas.  1/10 ounce - 5 Units Silver American Open Currency Standard approved coin.  BIN Price $8.95 with FREE postage.  During this final week on Ebay the seller sold his last 2 coins and the item is no longer in stock.  He had previously sold 88 single pieces on Ebay (plus more in multi-coin lots).

11/14/17

U. S. Banknotes on medals.  Lot of 12 different denominations $1.00 to $10,000.00.  I have mentioned these before and noted that they are not listable as MTC’s.  This lot described just to show how cheap they can be!  Even though the lot was offered for just $9.99 with FREE shipping, there were NO bids!

11/15/17

Pennsylvania, Jonestown.  1961 Centennial Half Dollar.  Start $1.00.  Postage $3.00.  Listed until December 26 when the seller ended his listing unsold.

11/16/17

Pennsylvania, Manheim.  1962 Bicentennial Half Dollar.  Graded as MS-66 PL by NGC, and entombed in a plastic coin slab.  A very choice token - the reverse, at least, worthy of the very high grade.  Available for $49.00 Buy It Now, with FREE shipping.  Still available at the end of January.

11/17/17

Alaska, Anchorage.  1967 Dave’s Alaskan Trade Dollar.  Start $7.99.  Postage $3.50.  No bids.  Listed 3 more weeks at the same start and then made a BIN item at the same cost.  Still available on January 15.

11/17/17

Colorado, Loveland and Twin Peaks.  2014 Lesher Dollar $50 Trade Token by Daniel Carr.  These octagonal silver pieces were made as updated copies of the Lesher Dollars from Colorado.  This reproduction has a blank space for an inscription and number where whatever you wish could be stamped in.  This one read LITTLE BIGHORN / WM. CUSTER / 26/6/1876 and was the only one so inscribed.  Unique - but then most of these probably were.  Offered for $198.88 plus $4.95 received no bids during the week it was an auction item, and no purchases since it became a BIN item at the same price.  It is still available, with the current listing ending January 27, 2018.  This and the similar $100 pieces will not be listed.

11/17/17

Hawaii, Maui.  1997 Maui Trade Dollar.  Standard nickel-silver version.  Start $24.99.  Postage $3.75.  No bids.  Listed at the same start for two additional weeks, and when no one placed a bid, the seller ended his listing unsold.

11/17/17

Indiana, Sheridan.  1960 Centennial Half Dollar.  Start 99¢.  Postage $3.00.  Sold to a single bidder at the opening price.

11/17/17

North Dakota.  1972 Central Dakota Coin Club Souvenir Dollar.  No location stated, but Sheridan, Wells, Eddy, Foster Stutsman and Kidder Counties are pictured.  The capital of the state, Bismark, is by far the largest city in those counties, so it was the likely location of the club, which is no longer operational.  This 39mm nickel-silver piece was manufactured by the same mint which made the contemporaneous North and South Dakota Dollar sets.  It says SOUVENIR DOLLAR right on it, but it does not mention an event it is commemorating, so perhaps it is not listable.  Offered for a start of just $1.00, but with a high $5.00 postage charge, this item has received no bids over the months, and is still available for the same opening bid.  The current listing ends on January 18.

11/17/17

South Dakota.  1972 South Dakota Dollar.  Mintage 6,000.  This one edge numbered 006657, which makes me question the original mintage report supplied by the manufacturer.  Catalog value $3.50.  The start was $5.00 and postage $5.00 more.  Relisted at that price until the week ending December 16 when the start was dropped to $4.50.  Three weeks later to $4.00 and then to a $3.00 start - still plus the $5.00 shipping charge.  The current listing ends on January 16.  Another of these by a different seller ended on November 26, after just one week on Ebay -  but it had a much lower 59¢ plus $1.50 start.  After 3 bids by 2 bidders it brought $1.78.

11/18/17

Wyoming, Buffalo.  1984 Centennial Dollar Struck in Silver.  Unknown mintage.  Not previously cataloged.  I have been trying to get one of these since they were first issued, so I was very pleased to be the only bidder at its $29.00 with FREE shipping start.  Wow!  Giveaway!  This issue must have a relatively high mintage because this example is numbered 116, making it is quite a puzzle why I have not been able to turn one up (or even actually see one) over the last 33 years.  I’m glad to cross that one off my list!

11/19/17

Iowa, Emmetsburg.  1978 Irish Dollar.  Start was $1.75 plus $1.25 shipping.  It lasted for 4 more weeks before finally selling (as a BIN item at the same cost) on December 17.

11/19/17

Ohio, Harrison County (Cadiz).  1963 150th Anniversary Half Dollar.  Unknown mintage.  Catalog value $6.50.  The first of these I have seen on ebay since I started this list over 5 years ago.  Good and scarce, but it didn’t sell for much: I was able to buy it as the second bidder for just $2.53 after a $1.99 plus 85¢ start.  Too cheap!

11/19/17

Ohio, Lorain.  1959 125th Anniversary Half Dollar.  Start $1.99.  Postage 85¢.  Sold for the opening bid to a single bidder who placed two bids.

11/19/17

Pennsylvania, Franklin Area.  1968 Centennial Half Dollar.  Start $1.99.  Postage 85¢.  Sold for the opening bid to a single bidder.

11/20/17

Hawaii, Maui.  2007 Maui Dollar.  About Uncirculated.  Start $8.99 plus $3.85 shipping.  Still being offered for the same opening bid and postage charge - with the current listing ending on January 21.

11/20/17

Pennsylvania, Waynesboro.  1963 Civil War Centennial Half Dollar.  Holed and suspended from a black pin-back ribbon.  The same item I wrote up on February 3.  Back then I said I would bid if the seller ever lowered his price.  Well, it took almost a year, and the price didn’t get lowered very much, but when I noticed the start drop to $6.00 plus $4.00 I placed my bid and - not surprisingly - won for the opening bid.

11/21/17

Arizona, Lake Havasu City.  1981 Dollar in the standard antiqued bronze finish.  Sold to a single bidder at the $3.95 plus $1.00 opening bid.

11/21/17

Michigan, Montague.  1967 Centennial Half Dollar.  Start $6.99.  Postage $3.50.  An attractive token, but just priced too high.  It went a couple more weeks before being made a BIN item, and it is still available for the same terms now as I type this two months later.

11/21/17

Nebraska, York.  1970 Centennial Dollar.  Start 99¢.  FREE shipping.  There were 5 bids by 4 bidders and it sold for $3.13.

11/21/17

North Dakota.  North Dakota Dollars, series one, 1971 to 1980 in heavy plastic display case.  Includes the nickel-silver 1972 “error” Dollar with South Dakota reverse as well as a 1975 Fargo N. D. - Moorhead MN. Centennial medal.  The regular issue dollars are numbered, these being 3389.  The seller noted that he thought these tokens were silver (they are nickel-silver), but said he was not sure.  Offered for $49.95 plus $14.50 shipping.  No bids - the following week the start dropped to $24.99 plus $14.50. After two weeks at this lowered price with no bids, the seller ended the lot unsold.

11/21/17

Washington, Roslyn.  1986 Centennial Dollar.  Start $3.95.  Postage $1.00.  Sold for $12.40 after 8 bids from 2 bidders battling it out.  A scarce issue.

11/21/17

West Virginia, Kanawha County.  1963 Centennial Half Dollar.  Start $20.00.  Postage $3.00.  After a week the seller lowered the price to $15.00, and it sold to a single bidder.

11/21/17

U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix.  Undated (1990) Christiansted Daler.  Unknown mintage.  Catalog value $6.50.  After a $6.00 plus  $4.25 (Canadian) start this piece brought $8.38 ($6.73 U.S.), which is just about what I value it at.  Too bad the winner had to pay another $3.41 (U.S.) for postage.  Still probably a bargain since this is the first appearance of one of these since I began these monthly listings 5 years ago.

11/22/17

Arizona, Lake Havasu City.  1976 Havasu Bicentennial Dollar.  Standard bright copper finish.  Start 99¢. FREE postage.  Sold for $7.50 after 8 bids by 5 bidders.

11/23/17

Hawaii, Maui.  Maui Chamber of Commerce Dollar set one, 1992 - 1996 in cardboard holder.  Start $14.95.  Postage $3.00.  There were 13 bids by 4 bidders, and it eventually sold for $33.00.  Not bad for these 5 tokens that catalog for a total of $12.50!

11/23/17

Hawaii, Maui.  2004 Maui Dollar.  The start was $2.95 plus $1.00 for postage, and there were 14 bids by just 3 bidders who pushed the price up to a very respectable $10.50.

11/23/17

11/23/17

Pennsylvania, Erie.  1963 Perry Sesquicentennial Half Dollar, August 7 - Washington Crossing the Delaware version.  Mintage 10,000.  Catalog value $2.00.  A very common issue I have not bothered to mention in these monthly reports before.  No doubt there have been hundreds of these listed on Ebay over the past 5 years.  This example caught my attention because the price was so high.  Opening bid $11.00.  Postage $3.00.  After 2 weeks the opening bid dropped to $9.00, and was listed until January 26, when the seller ended the lot unsold.

11/24/17

Indiana, Logansport.  1976 US Bicentennial, County Sesquicentennial Dollar.  Antiqued nickel-silver plate.  Opening bid $5.00.  FREE shipping.  Listed until January 27 when the seller ended the listing unsold.

11/25/17

Minnesota, Sleepy Eye.  1972 Centennial Half Dollar.  Extremely Fine - About Uncirculated condition, most of the original luster gone.  Start $9.99.  Shipping FREE.  There have been no bids, and was available at the original start until January 27 when the listing was ended unsold.

11/26/17

Hawaii. 1883-1983 Kalakaua Centennial Dala replica - “Trial Piece” with 3 incomplete impressions on 3 of the four corners of a piece of nickel silver scrap - similar to other pieces I have listed before.  This time the seller wanted a $249.00 plus $6.95 start.  There were no bids during this or the following week, so the seller ended his listing unsold.

11/26/17

Kansas.  1961 Official Centennial Coin for Sedgwick County.  Start $5.55.  Postage $2.85.  No bids.  For the week ending December 26 it became a BIN item.  Then the listing was ended by the seller “because the item is no longer available”.  However the same specimen quickly re-appeared and currently has a Make Offer option added.  The current listing ends on February 10.

11/27/17

Arizona, Scottsdale.  2014 Scottsdale Silver.  I don’t think I will list these (no real denomination, just SCOTTSDALE SILVER), but this one was going cheap, so I bid and won it for $16.75 after 9 bids by 7 bidders.  Postage was $2.60 more, so it didn’t cost me much more than the silver value.

11/27/17

Hawaii.  1996 King Kamehameha One Ounce Silver Aloha Dala for the Aloha Festival 50th Anniversary.  The holder for this issue with a mintage of 1,000 is marked NO. 214 (The coins were not numbered).  Start $75.00.  Postage $6.95.  There were no bids and the item was not immediately relisted, however it came back at the same price, then the postage was made FREE, and then the opening bid was lowered to $72.00 with FREE shipping.  It remains available, with the current listing ending on January 29.

11/27/17

Kansas.  Official Centennial Coins for Johnson County.  Pair in standard antique brass and nickel-silver plate.  The plated one is officially issued, and appears less frequently than the antique brass one, but I have never regarded it as especially scarce.  I guess some people do, because this pair was offered for $49.99 and sold to the second bidder for $50.99.

North Dakota, Williston Basin.  1961 Centennial Half Dollar.  About Uncirculated.  Start $19.99.  Postage $3.00.  No bids.  Listed for one more week at the same price, still with no bids, and then the seller ended the listing.

11/27/17

South Dakota, Sioux Falls.  1961 Dakota Centennial Half Dollar.  Lot of “40+” pieces, AU and UNC.  The start was $5.00 plus $3.00 shipping.  There were 3 bids, each from different bidder, and it sold for just $7.50.  Pretty cheap, even for one of the most common of all MTC’s!  Also closing today was a single example in AU/UNC that was set with a $13.00 plus $3.00 start.  No bids.  The next week it was back for $8.00 plus $3.00.  It has remained at that level ever since, with the current listing ending January 26.

The lot quickly returned for a $6.99 plus $3.00 BIN, then reverted to an auction item , now at a $5.99 start for the listing ending 1/25/18.  It is still available, with the current listing ending on February 2.

11/28/17

Michigan, Cedar Springs.  1956 Red Flannel Town Quarter.  Typical XF/AU condition.  Start $10.99 plus $3.00.  Initially relisted in error at $9.34, this one was changed to a BIN item for $7.99 plus $3.00, which is not a bad price for this hard-to-find token.  There were still no bids, so it was lowered a bit more - to a$5.99 start - and is still available, with the current listing ending on February 2.

11/28/17

Michigan, Hastings.  1955 Centennial Half Dollar, very slightly circulated.  Very scarce.  Once again I was the only bidder at the $11.99 plus $3.00 opening bid.  There seems to be very little competition for these scarce Michigan pieces from an advanced collection.

11/28/17

(Michigan), Luther.  Undated Luther Homecoming Quarter, Good to September 1.  Not previously listed.  Seems to be a listable issue - apparently for general use, with an expiry date, and similar to other Homecoming tokens already listed from other communities.  I was the only bidder at the $7.99 plus $3.00 start.  A little problematic because Luther is such a small community, population 318 in 2010, that a token issue is questionable.  However, this came from a nearly complete collection of modern Michigan commemoratives, so - for now - I will assume the original collector knew this token was from that location.  It should be easy to confirm (if I ever get around to it!).

11/28/17

Michigan, Mason.  1965 Centennial Half Dollar in About Uncirculated condition plus two different wooden nickels for the same event.  Start $10.99.  Then relisted for $9.34 Buy It Now, but that sale was ended because of “an error in the listing”.  It came right back for $6.99 BIN and is still available, with the current listing ending on January 25.

11/28/17

Michigan Vernon.  1971 Centennial Half Dollar.  Unknown mintage.  Catalog value $8.50.  This example finer than most, with a near unblemished surface.  For some reason these usually appear with unattractive spotty surfaces.  This one was nicer than the one in my collection, but not perfect.  Also included in this lot was an antiqued bronze version, but with a non-spendable reverse.  I won the lot as the second bidder for $12.29 after a $10.99 plus $3.00 start.
